The first official Jailbreak triathlon was held at Brandvlei Prison in Worcester on the 17th December 2006. The contestants started arriving at 05h15 for their body marking with the event starting at 07h00.

The day started with a 2.2km swim in the Brandvlei dam. The water was a pleasant 22 degrees which meant wetsuits were allowed. The swim consisted of two 1.1km laps. Apart from the sun rising dead ahead on the outgoing leg of the swim which made finding the buoy impossible, the swim conditions were good.
By the time we finished the swim the air temperature was well on its way to the 35 degrees we were to experience later in the day.
The 100km cycle consisted of us riding out to a 25km turning point and back, twice. The course was predominantly flat with an annoying wind picking up on the latter half of the cycle.
The 25km run then took us around an 8km route three times before ending off on 1km finishing straight. By the time the run started, the heat had taken its toll on those who had not hydrated sufficiently on the bike. There were more than sufficient water tables for a hot day like we were experiencing, unfortunately they ran out of water 3.5 hours before cut-off. The organizers were quick to respond, albeit only with warm water. With the mercury peaking at 35 degrees, that didn't help the body temperature much but it was liquid all the same.

I don't think Satori's Marc de Rooy will know what I am referring to as he finished 11th on the day, and probably on his way back to Cape Town by the time I had finished. A big CONGRATULATIONS to Marc for his great performance.

All in all a good and generally well organised day was had by all. Hopefully next year we'll be joined by more Satori's as there is a shorter race available as well.
